Fanlong Meng vs Rob Powdrill - Post fight review
Chinese prospect Fanlong Meng took on Aussie Rob Powdrill last night at the Beijing, Diamond Court. Winning by TKO in the 4th round.
On paper it seemed like an even match up Meng 6-0 and Rob 6-2. Robert Powdrill is a fairly well respected fighter on the Australian scene, a tough former Kickboxer and MMA competitor who started his boxing career in 2014. He made his name knocking out former Olympian Damien Hooper in devastating fashion, leaving Hooper face first on the canvas in the 1st round.
Meng, himself a fellow Olympian in London 2012, avoided the same fate and thoroughly dismantled Powdrill using length and reach to his full advantage. He scored three knockdowns in total, including two at the end that forced the Australian corner to throw in the towel. Meng's straight left from the southpaw stance seemed to be the punch of the fight, landing over and again knocking his opponent off balance and into the ropes. Outclassed technically, Rob went out on his feet like the warrior he is, but by then the referee had waved off the fight at 1:23 miniutes into the 4th round
Meng improves to 7-0, and shows his pedigree against a tough but over matched opponent.
He has a long way to go to be a world champion at the 175lb division, but by my reckoning is probably the best boxing prospect on the Chinese scene.
